Hosting and site care get bundled together in a lot of people’s minds, but they’re doing genuinely different jobs — and the gap between them is exactly where most neglected websites run into trouble.
What hosting actually does
Hosting is infrastructure. It’s the server your site’s files live on, and it makes sure that server is running and reachable. That’s the job, and most hosting providers do it reliably. What it doesn’t do:
- Notice that a plugin or piece of software on your site has an unpatched vulnerability
- Take a backup before something breaks — or check that the backups it does take actually restore correctly
- Tell you when your site has quietly gone down
- Update your content, fix a broken link, or swap out a price
None of that is a failure on the hosting provider’s part. It’s simply outside the scope of what “hosting” means.
What a Care Plan is actually for
- Security updates, applied on a schedule instead of whenever someone happens to notice they’re overdue.
- Backups that are actually tested, not just scheduled and forgotten — a backup you’ve never restored from is a guess, not a safety net.
- Uptime monitoring, so a site going down gets caught in minutes, not whenever a customer happens to mention it.
- Small content updates — a new price, a new phone number, a seasonal banner — handled without you needing to touch code or wait on a one-off freelance quote.
Why this gap goes unnoticed until it matters
A site can run for a long time on hosting alone with nothing visibly wrong — right up until a plugin vulnerability gets exploited, a “reliable” host’s backup turns out not to restore cleanly, or the business only finds out the site’s been down for two days because a customer mentioned it. None of those are hosting failures. They’re care failures, and hosting was never the layer meant to catch them.
